Cabinet approves Amendment to the Inland Vessels Act, 1917

New Delhi, Mar 15 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for introduction of "The Inland Vessels (Amendment) Bill, 2005' in Parliament, with certain amendments.

The amendements were recommended by the Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture to declare Lakhipur-Bhanga Stretch of River Barak as a National Waterway. The total length of the waterway would be around 121 km, and the entire stretch is in Assam.

Briefing newspersons here on the outcome of the Cabinet decisions, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said the amendment Bill will "keep pace with the developments which have taken place in Inland Waterways." The following developmental works would be undertaken by the Inland Waterways Authority of India :- (i) Fairway development by dredging, excavation and widening of canals.

(ii) Construction of terminals with mechanical handling facility, storage areas at four locations namely Bhanga, Badarpur, Silchar and Lakhipur.

Mr Dasmunsi said the tentative cost of developmental works has been worked out at Rs. 46.00 crore, to be met through budgetary support.

Kashmir highway still closed, Chief Minister concerned

Srinagar, Mar 15 (UNI) The Kashmir valley remained cut off from the rest of the country for the fifth consecutive day today following the closure of the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway due to landslides and shooting stones. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad while expressing concern over the frequent closure of the highway, directed the Beacon authorities to work out a long term proposal so that the life line to Kashmir remains open uninterrupted. Assembly adjourns as opposition Cong disrupts house

Jaipur, Mar 15 (UNI) The proceedings in the Rajasthan Assembly could not be conducted for the third day today as the opposition members kept disrupting the house on the issue of compensation to the farmers who lost their crops in the unseasonal rain and hailstrom. The Speaker Sumitra Singh adjourned the house till 1400 hrs. With the commencement of the session this morning the opposition Congress members holding samples of the crops perished in the hailstrom in their hands started shouting.....

Ten, including seven of a family, die as earth caves in

Dhanbad, Mar 15 (UNI) Ten people, including seven of a family, were killed after land caved in near residential colony of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL)'s Kusunda coal mines in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district in the wee hours today. Five critically injured were admitted to Central Hospital here. Police said mine loader Md Shamim, his wife and five others of the family were killed on the spot adding another three people also died in the accident.
