Waterlink with Chittagong beneficial to NE: Transport Minister

Guwahati, Mar 14(UNI) The Asom government today said linking of Brahmaputra national water highway with the Chittagong port in Bangladesh would lead to massive economic benefits for the entire North East region.

Replying to a short notice question in the state Assembly, state Transport Minister Chandan Brahma informed the issue of linking Brahmaputra with the Chittangong port was under consideration of the Central government.

To a sub-question, he said the state government, through its internal water transport wing, would arrange for transportation from Numaligarh Refinery and finished products from Namrup, both well connected with water-ways, as water transportation was the cheapest mode.

Nandigram flareup claims 14;Opp parties' bandh on Mar 16

Nandigram, Mar 14 (UNI) At least 13 people were killed and 50 injured when police fired upon villagers resisting the law keepers from entering the embattled area in a major flare-up in Nandigram of East Midnapore district today. Major fire in NTPC Kaniha power plant

Talcher, Mar 14 (UNI) A major fire in the unit four of the NTPC's largest thermal power plant at Kaniha today destroyed the transformer generator of turbine, forcing the authorities to shut down the unit. NTPC sources said the fire was noticed in the fourth unit of the plant around 1630 hours. Although it took more than one hour to bring the situation under control and extinguish the blaze but the transformer generator was completely burnt in the fire. The incident.....
