Wanted CPI (Maoist) Area Commander nabbed

Varanasi, Mar 14 (UNI) A day after the arrest of a Naxalite and recovery of explosives, police in neighbouring Chandauli district early today nabbed a wanted CPI (Maoist) Area Commander to foil Naxal plans of reviving the extremist movement in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.

CPI (Maoist) Area Commander of neighbouring Bihar Chote Lal was arrested following specific tip off from Chakia crossing early today, Police Superintendent of Chandauli district Pravin Kumar told UNI.

The arrested naxal carried a reward of Rs 20,000 announced on his head by the Bihar government and was wanted in connection with at least 30 criminal cases, including the murder of a Deputy Police Superintendent in Vikramganj (Bihar), Mr Kumar added.

A nine mm pistol has been seized from Chote Lal's possession.

Initial interrogation revealed the CPI (Maoist) faced with crippling operations in UP were planning something big to revive their movement in the Naxal infested Chandauli, Mirzapur and Sonebhadra districts, the SP said.

The arrested naxal hailing from Rohtas (Bihar) was earlier part of the Peoples War Group (PWG), but following its merger with CPI (Maoist) he became an Area Commander of the latter in the Bhabhua and Rohtas districts of Bihar.

The arrested Area Commander was second to the sub-zonal commander of CPI (Maoist) in the twin Bihar districts and was planning to extend operations to UP.

The Chandauli police yesterday claimed to have busted a major naxal plot to disrupt UP elections with the arrest of a technical naxal hand Ghanshyam from Chakia police station area of the same district.

A large cache of explosives meant for triggering IED blasts were also seized from Ghanshyam.

HC notices to Chief Secy, Jaipur collector

Jaipur, March 14 (UNI) The Rajasthan High Court today issued showcause notices to state Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Divisional commissioner and District Collector for allowing professional dancers to perform during Holi on the Collectorate premises. The officials have been asked to file their reply within two months. Taking suo motu notice of an application filed by an independent employee in the case, Justice A K Parihar passed the orders. The application said employee Ramavtar Bharadwaj took oral permission from District Collector.....

IIHS seeks more funds from HP Government

Shimla, Mar 3 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Himalayan Studies (IIHS) of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has requested the University Grants Commission (UGC) to allow the utilisation of its funds beyond March 31, 2007 for continuing with ongoing research activities. ''The IIHS has utilised a sum of Rs 3.34 crore only up till March 31, 2007 out of a total of Rs five crore allocated to it by the UGC five years ago,'' institute's 17-member research staff and nine-member adminstrative.....

Inter-state antique gun theft gang busted in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Mar 14(UNI) Police have busted an interstate gang involved in antique gun stealing with the arrest of six people. District Superintendent of police Rajavendra Suhasa said the police have recovered antique guns worth 60 lakh which were stolen from the royal palace of Jhalawar a month ago. The arrested gang members confessed to the police that they have stolen guns from over dozen gun houses of erstwhile royalties spread over the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttar.....
