New Delhi, Mar 14:  Books meant to be distributed under the Centre's ambitious Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan are being sold as scrap in Madhya Pradesh, Congress leader V Narayanasamy today alleged.

During zero hour in the Rajya Sabha, he said centrally-sponsored schemes are being misused by the states and the tendency must be checked.

Mr Narayanasamy was joined by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj who said books for Urdu and Marathi classes were sold for Rs 2 per kg in collusion with teachers who have now been suspended.

Basant Betons to start greenfield concrete unit

Bangalore, Mar 14: Basant Betons today announced a Rs 40 crore investment in a new state of the art plant to manufacture concrete products for landscaped areas.

A market leader in cement concrete technology and allied products the company aimed to invest Rs 100 crore over the next three years to set up similar plants in Hyderabad and Hubli, Basant Betons Managing Director Suresh Patil told newsmen here.

Jail mates to have telephone access in K'taka

Mangalore, Mar 14:  Jailmates in Karnataka will soon have telephone access to have contact with outside world.

To begin with Telephone booths, with STD facility, would be installed in Bangalore Central Jail at a cost of Rs 2.39 lakh.

However, the facility comes with strict supervision by the authorities, Additional Director General of Police (Prison) S T Ramesh told newsmen here yesterday.

He said that the prisoners, both convicted and undertrials, would be provided with telephone cards.....

Mizoram to be corridor to the east: M M Lakhera

Aizawl, Mar 14: Mizoram Governor Lt Gen (Retd) M M Lakhera has assured to soon transform Mizoram into a corridor to the east.

Addressing the tenth session of fifth state Assembly yesterday, Mr Lakhera said the Centre under the 'Look East Policy' had agreed to take up two major projects for the economic deelopment of the state.

''Rs 7,459 million Kaldan Multi-Modal Transport project, will link the region with Sittwe port in Myanmar, providing a much-needed access by sea,'' he said.

CNF-SPDC peace talks start from Mar 15

Aizawl, Mar 14: A seven-member delegation of Chin National Front (CNF) will start negotiating peace with State Peace and Development Council(SPDC) of Myanmarese military yesterday.

The CNF has been fighting for the democracy of the people of Mynamer for past two decades and took the initiative of holding talks for finding an amicable solution to the problem.

CNF sources here today said the team would hold meeting at Rih township in Chin state, along No 2 Indo-Burma border trade road, across Champai town.....
