School books sold as scrap: Cong leader

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) Books meant to be distributed under the Centre's ambitious Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan are being sold as scrap in Madhya Pradesh, Congress leader V Narayanasamy today alleged.

During zero hour in the Rajya Sabha, he said centrally-sponsored schemes are being misused by the states and the tendency must be checked.

Mr Narayanasamy was joined by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj who said books for Urdu and Marathi classes were sold for Rs 2 per kg in collusion with teachers who have now been suspended.

Bandit chieftain Jagjivan Parihar dead

Morena, MP, Mar 15 (UNI) Dacoit chieftain Jagjivan Parihar, who carried a reward of Rs 5.5 lakh on his head, has been killed in an encounter in this district's Garhi Budhara village along with six other members of his gang, the police said. During last night's police action, Town Inspector Veerendra Singh Bhadauria was also killed and four personnel injured but stated to be out of danger. They were undergoing treatment at Gwalior. The Uttar Pradesh Police had announced a reward.....

34 tribals among 50 killed in naxal attack

Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, Mar 15 (UNI) Sixteen personnel of the Chhattisgarh Special Armed Force and 34 special police officers (SPOs) -- local youth recruited to assist the forces -- were among those killed in a Maoist attack on Dantewada district's Ranibodli camp in the wee hours today. Official sources said that eight SPOs and four CSAF personnel, including a company commander, were injured. They were provided first aid at a hospital at Kutru and are being shifted to a hospital at Bijapur......

SP MLA stages unique protest in MP Assy

Bhopal, Mar 15 (UNI) Samajwadi Party (SP) Member Sunilam today staged an unique protest in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly by continuously speaking for two-and-a-half hours, sans the Speaker's permission, to press for taking up a call attention motion on a lady sub-inspector's murder allegedly involving an Indian Police Service officer. Notwithstanding Speaker Ishwardas Rohani's ruling that Dr Sunilam's statement would not be placed on record, the SP legislator remained on his feet from Zero Hour till the Speaker consented to thrash.....
