RS returns Railway Appropriation Bills

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha today returned The Appropriation (Railways) Vote on Account Bill, 2007, and The Appropriation (Railways) Bill, 2007, despite uproar during the reply by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.

The House returned the two Bills amid protests by opposition members against the Railway Minister's ''inadequate response'' to some issues raised by them including employment, electrification and gauge conversion.

Earlier the House was ajourned twice amid pandemonium over the Minister's comment on ''extortion'' during the previous NDA regime.

The house was first adjourned for 15 minutes and then again for 30 minutes as the opposition members were on their feet, demanding that the Railway Minister withdraw his charge of corruption against the previous NDA government.

The Railway Minister listed several steps his Ministry was initiating for a complete turnaround of the Indian Railways. These include shifting congestion from the existing lines to dedicated ones, preparing a fessibility report for fast trains in metros including Mumbai and taking effective steps for electrification, construction of bridges etc.

'Chhattisgarh drives the naxal national average': Patil

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) The increased incidence of ultra activities in Chhattisgarh has shot up the ''naxal national average'', spreading a scare across the country, Home Minister Shivraj Patil told Rajya Sabha today. Answering the question of Mr Vijay J Darda (Congress), Mr Patil said during the question hour that there was a 47 per cent increase in naxal activities and 56 per cent rise in killings in the state. The sprawling shrub forests and hilly terrains provided an ideal.....

Press not giving due coverage to Parliament Proceedings: Naidu

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) Cutting across party lines members in the Rajya Sabha today expressed their anguish over ''disappearance'' of the Parliament proceedings in the print media particularly and called for appropritate steps for ensuring due coverage. Raising the issue just before the initiation of the debate on the General Budget 2007-08 by former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha in the House, BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu got up to say what was the relevance of debating the issues when nothing.....

Centre seeks report from W B Govt over Nandigram firing

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) Home Minister Shivraj Patil today told the Rajya Sabha that the Centre had asked for a detailed report from the West Bengal Government over today's firing in the proposed Special Economic Zone in Nandigram in the state. ''According to the preliminary information that we got through telephonic conversation, six people were killed in the firing,'' he said making a statement in the House on a direction of the Chair. He said he had spoken to Chief.....
