National Games Jharkhand's prestige, Koda tells House

Ranchi, Mar 14 (UNI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda today assured the House that the government would spare no pains to ensure smooth conduct of National Games in the state.

Mr Koda's assurance came after the Assembly was adjourned twice as the Opposition created a din during the Question Hour, criticising the UPA government over law and order issue in the state.

Concerned over the continuous noisy scene prevailing in the House, Mr Koda said it was not ''fair'' to disrupt the proceedings of the house.

As the House assembled for the question hour, BJP chief C P Singh, raising the issue, said the contractor constructing the 'Khel Gaon' premises for the coming National Games here was yesterday asked to pay Rs ten lakh as donation allegedly by the supporters of a political outfit.

He also alleged that even a businessman in the Lalpur area was stabbed by the unidentified youths recently.

Amid shouts by the Opposition, the Chief Minister rose to say the government was concerned over the matter, adding few people were creating hurdle in the construction of the mega sports complex.

Mr Koda said the National Games was the prestige of the state.

Earlier, Mr Singh urged the government to verify to which political outfit the donations seekers belonged.

The Opposition NDA several times kept raising slogans, squatting on floor leading to noisy scene in the House.

Intervening then, Speaker Alamgir Alam asked the government to seek a report from the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police.

Deputy Chief MInister Stephen Marandi said he would look into the matter after getting reports from the senior officials.

The House was adjoured at about 1124 hrs till noon amid uproar by the Opposition MLAs on the issue.

After the House assembled for the second time, Leader of Oppostion Arjun Munda said the government was not concerned about criminal activities taking place in broad day-light in the state.

Seven private TV channels shut down

Dhaka, Mar 15 (UNI) The Bangladesh caretaker government has clamped down on the booming electronic media business, proscribing seven private television channels today for their alleged faulty inception. An official order stated the shut down of the channels as they were on the air ''without proper permission'' from the Ministry of Information. The TV channels include STV USA, Channel S, Ruposhi Bangla, Falgun Music, TV-5, Bijoy TV and My TV. Operation of any television channel comes under the publicity policy.....
