National Conference of NGOs in Bangalore on Apr 28, 29

Bangalore, Mar 14 (UNI) A two-day maiden national conference of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), will be held in the city from April 28, NHRC Chairman Dr Justice Shivraj V Patil said today.

Talking to newspersons here, he said that in all, 100 NGOs and human rights experts would participate in the conference.

Dr Justice Patil said the main theme of the conference would be 'Right to Education and Right to Health'. The conference would discuss, among other things, custodial deaths, child abuse, violence and torture.

He said the conference also aimed at studying how best NGOs could work in tandem with the NHRC to protect human rights.

Student drowns at well in TN

Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, Mar 16 (UNI) A 20-year-old first year Polytechnic student was drowned at a irrigation well at Cheyyar near here yesterday. Police said the mishap occurred when the student Keerthi, who was studying in a private Polytechnic here and residing in its hostel, went to take his bath at the well. Based on the information, a police team rushed to the spot, fished out the deceased body and sent it for post-mortem,police added. UNI.....

Two students drown while taking bath in TN

Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, Mar 16 (UNI) Two teen-aged students were drowned when they were taking their bath at Bay of Bengal at the Mahabalipuram tourist spot near here yesterday. Police said the mishap occurred when the students, who were studying in a tutorial college went for picnic. The deceased were identified as Rajasekaran (18) of Madurantakam and his friend Sundaresan (19) of Kadapperi. The bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem, police added. UNI.....

Govt will take steps to acquire leased lands: Rajendran

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 16 (UNI) Kerala Revenue Minister K P Rajendran today informed the state assembly that the government would take all measures to regain the possession of leased land that had been misused by institutions violating the Lease agreement. Replying to questions by Mr V J Thankappan and others, he said the government had noted that the leased lands were being used for other purposes violating the agreement and the government would take stringent action against them.
