Mizoram to be corridor to the east

Aizawl, Mar 14 (UNI) Mizoram Governor Lt Gen (Retd) M M Lakhera has assured to soon transform Mizoram into a corridor to the east.

Addressing the tenth session of fifth state Assembly yesterday, Mr Lakhera said the Centre under the 'Look East Policy' had agreed to take up two major projects for the economic deelopment of the state.

''Rs 7,459 million Kaldan Multi-Modal Transport project, will link the region with Sittwe port in Myanmar, providing a much-needed access by sea,'' he said.

He also said Triangular Road project would link the state with east and north Myanmar, connecting Rih village on Mizoram-Myanmar border with Falam and Tiddim.

The Border Roads Organisation have submitted a detailed project report of Rs 711.47 crore for the purpose.

He also said under the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme, the government had fixed a target of providing safe drinking water to 134 habitations during 2006-07 of which only 47 habitations were covered.

Britain election timetable to be decided next week

London, Mar 16 (UNI) A timetable for elections to replace Prime Minister Tony Blair is expected to be agreed next week by Labour's National Executive Committee. Islamabad sealed off ahead of SJC hearing against Justice Chaudhary

Islamabad, Mar 16 (UNI) The city resembled a battlefield today as the country's Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) heard a presidential reference against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary amid skirmishes between a heavy police contingent and activists of the pro-Islamist Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal(MMA). The police arrested MMA chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad and another central alliance leader and sitting MP Hafiz Hussain Ahmad as they tried to lead a rally after offering congregation today in front of Parliament lodges overlooking the Parliament house. US Senate rejects proposal to withdraw troops from Iraq

Washington, Mar 16 (UNI) The Democrats suffered a setback when the US Senate, in which the party has a majority, rejected a party-sponsored resolution, calling for the pullout of American troops from Iraq by March 2008. The Democratic-controlled Senate turned down the resolution by a 50 to 48 vote. By and large, the vote was along party lines. Only one Republican, Gordon Smith, voted in favor of the measure whereas two Democrats voted with the Republicans to defeat the proposal. However,.....
