Mizo Govt takes steps to stop turmeric adulteration

Aizawl, Mar 14 (UNI) The latest policy of Mizoram government in combating famine has run into rough weathers with alleged adulteration of turmeric seeds being supplied to the government.

The adulteration of turmeric seeds was detected in Serchhip and it was found that some of the seeds had already been bought, mixed with rotten ginger.

Meanwhile, the Mizo National Front's Farmers' Cell today condemned the suppliers of turmeric seeds saying that some bags contained only the 'aichhia' variety, which looks like turmeric seeds, while other bags were mixed with real turmeric.

Terming the incident as "unfortunate", the release said all Farmers' Cell units in the villages would remain vigilant so that the Serchhip incident would not get repeated in other places.

On the other, Aizawl police have arrested one supplier yesterday.

Police said arrested Lalhmingthanga was a resident of Samtlang village and supplied adulterted seeds to the Kulikawn horticulture centre and distributed to turmeric growers from ITI locality of the capital town.
