Life limping back to normal in Kashmir after heavy snowfall

Srinagar, Mar 14 (UNI) Life is slowly limping back to normal though majority of roads are still under snow, drains are overflowing and electricity is yet to be restored in the valley.

Majority of shops and business establishments reopened this morning after remaining closed for almost two days due to snowfall, highest in the month of March after 15 years.

However, vegetable, meat, milk and fruit shops remained closed.

People in large numbers were seen purchasing essential commodities in the city. Attendance in the government offices was also near normal today after they remaining closed yesterday.

Jammu and Kashmir government has already announced holiday in all educational institutions till March 19 because of snowfall.

Transport service also resumed after two days on some selected routes where the authorities had cleared accumulated snow.

Snow on main roads to different towns of the valley has also been removed and road communication restored.

However, a majority of far flung and remote areas remained cut off from the rest of the valley due to snowfall.

The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has also yet to start snow clearance operation in the interior areas of the city, making the movement almost impossible.

Majority of roads and bylanes in the city are under one feet of water because of poor drinage system.

The authorities are yet to restore electricity in the valley.

Punjab wants simple security clearance procedure on Pak-buses

Chandigarh, Mar 14 (UNI) The Punjab government has asked the Union Home Ministry to ease the visa and security check clearance that Indian passengers travelling to Pakistan by road through the Wagah check post have to undergo. ''Perhaps if the visa and security procedures are simplified, the occupancy rate on board the Amritsar-Lahore and Amritsar-Nankana Sahib buses could increase'', state Transport Minister Mohan Lal said while talking to reporters here today. Khanduri voices concern over crop loss in Uttarakhand

Dehra Dun, Mar 14 (UNI) Expressing concern over the losses to crops due to inclement weather, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Maj Gen (retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri today asked the departments concerned to prepare estimation reports so that compensation to farmers could be announced. He asked all the District Magistrates to prepare estimation reports on the crop loss and other properties due to the heavy hailstorm and rains that occurred yesterday, and provide compensations to farmers accordingly. Gen Khanduri also urged the DMs.....

Centre reduces M P's quota of BPL kerosene, wheat, sugar

Bhopal, Mar 14 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said the Centre had reduced the state's quota of kerosene, wheat and sugar for distribution to weaker sections. Intervening in a discussion in the Assembly in connection with the new BPL list, Mr Chouhan said the government was committed to improve the condition of the poor and would ensure that those in the list were supplied ration at cheaper rates. The new BPL list came into force.....
