Iraqi children undergo treatment in AIMS

Kochi, Mar 14 (UNI) Five children from Iraq succesfully underwent cardiac surgeries at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) here.

According to an official release here today, four of them, who had completely recovered, would return to their homeland in a week's time. The other child was still recuperating at the hospital.

The children were referred to AIMS by the National Iraqi Assistance Centre (NIAC) on February 15.

The five children, the first batch of 170 children scheduled for advanced and specialised treatment at the institute, were examined by a team of cardiac surgeons and cardiologists, including Dr Suresh G Rao, Chief of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Dr Suresh G Rao and Chief of Cardioligy Division Dr Krishna Kumar.

Previously, the NIAC, a governmental agency in Iraq, referred patients to the US, Turkey and Jordon and AIMS was the only hopsital in India to receive patients from Iraq.

Govt must issue final notification on soft drinks standards: CSE

New Delhi, Mar 15 (UNI) The Centre for Science and Environment today said government must notify the total amount of pesticides allowed in soft drinks. ''Otherwise, it will negate the effort to regulate soft drinks and make it completely useless,'' a CSE statement said. While welcoming the report of a government expert committee which recommended a standard to regulate soft drinks, CSE urged the need to mandate the standards so that safety was not compromised. Central team to visit Mizoram ADCs for direct funding

Aizawl, Mar 13 (UNI) A ten-member team of Central Financial Experts is scheduled to visit all the three Autonomous District Councils (ADC) of Mizoram this week to inspect the financial management system. Official sources here today said the team would also explore the possibilities of introduction of direct funding system from the Centre and inspect financial management procedure of the councils since its inception in 1972. The Centre had been chalking out plans to hand over more powers to the ADCs.....
