India proposes 10-km stretch along its border with Myanmar

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) India has not received any favourable response from Myanmar to its proposal to undertake fencing in about 10-km stretch near Moreh in Manipur along the India-Myanmar border, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Home S Reghupathy said in a written reply that discussions had been held at various levels with the Government of Myanmar to seek their cooperation to start Reconnaissance Survey and Trace Cut for border fencing.

"However, no favourable response has been received from the Government of Myanmar so far," he said.

Mr Reghupathy said the government had already undertaken construction of fencing along India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders.

He said though all the international borders of the country are sensitive from security point of view, instances of smuggling of intoxicants mainly from across India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders have come to the notice of the Government.

Mr Reghupathy said 81.9 kgs of heroin, 4.54 kg of opium, 5402.02 kg of ganja, 235 kg of hemp, 0.65 kg of brown sugar and 581.05 kg of poppy husk in 2006.

The seizure of narcotic items up to February this year was : heroin - 11.04 kg, Ganja - 1598.40 kg, Hemp - 491.50 kg, Brown Sugar - 0.35 kg, Poppy Husk - 50 kg.

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha today returned The Appropriation (Railways) Vote on Account Bill, 2007, and The Appropriation (Railways) Bill, 2007, despite uproar during the reply by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.
