Hectic parleys among Cong, Morcha, RLD; result likely tonight

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) Hectic parleys among top leaders of the Congress, the VP Singh-led Jana Morcha and the Rashtriya Lok Dal of Ajit Singh continued late into this evening in a bid to hammer out an alliance for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, and a final decision was expected tonight, according to sources.

They, however, said annoucement would be made tomorrow.

Jana Morcha convenor Raj Babbar today had a meeting with Congress MP from the state Rahul Gandhi and there were some ''positive signs', a source in the Morcha said.

UPCC chief Salman Khurshid is also in the capital and has held several rounds of meeting with the Morcha and RLD leaders.

Mr VP Singh and Mr Babbar have already met Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The parties forming the Jan Morcha include the CPI, CPI(M-L), the Indian Justice Party headed by Udit Raj and some smaller parties.

Besides it has also in its fold the NCP and the LJP.

The BSP has already declared that it would go it alone in the polls.

The CPI-M has decided to go with the Samajwadi Party. The Samata Party also today announced that it would campaign for the SP in the elections on the principle of ''non-Congressism'' despite the poll alliance between the BJP, Apna Dal and the Janata Dal(U).

BJP's chief minsterial candidate Kalyan Singh and state pary chief Kesarinath Tripathi were also in the capital to discuss seat distribution among the alliance partners wih their top leaders.

The notification for the first phase of Assembly polls beginning April 7 was issued yesterday.

Mulayam's sibling to file nomination papers tomorrow

Lucknow, Mar 14 (UNI) Samajwadi Party general secretary and state PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav will file his nomination papers for the Jaswant Nagar seat tomorrow for the forthcoming assembly elections. Younger sibling of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shivpal is the first senior political leader to file his nomination papers for the assembly elections in the state. Ballots would be cast in Jaswant Nagar seat in Etawah district on April 7 during phase I of elections. Shivpal is a two-time.....

SAD candidate wins Beas assembly seat

Amritsar, Mar 14 (UNI) The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won the Beas assembly seat, with its candidate Manjinder Singh Kang had defeating his nearest rival Jasbir Singh Dimpa of the Congress by a margin of 4,183 votes in a 12-cornered contest. SAD wrested the seat from the Congress to take its tally to 49 seats in the 117-member Assembly. The BJP, an ally of the SAD had won 19 seats in the elections to 116 constituencies held last month, to.....

BSP issues 'appeal' ahead of UP poll

Lucknow, Mar 14 (UNI) BSP today issued an appeal to the electorate seeking an end to the 'goonda raj' of the ruling Samajwadi Party. Former chief minister and BSP national president Ms Mayawati chose to issue an appeal instead of releasing the customary manifesto for the seven-phase assembly poll. Yesterday, she had released the list of all the 403 candidates. The seven-page appeal slammed the Mulayam Singh Yadav government for failing to curb the increasing crime graph and ''befooling'' the electorate.....
