Hail damage: MP govt to compensate

Bhopal, Mar 14 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh government has directed the collectors of hailstorm-affected districts to conduct immediate surveys of loss of life and property due to hail, rain, lightning and wind and distribute compensation forthwith.

A preliminary report mentioned 16 lightning-linked fatalities in Sidhi, Satna, Damoh and Umaria districts. Revenue Minister Kamal Patel directed the collectors to disburse compensation under revenue rules.

Wheat, gram and coriander crops suffered extensive damage over the past couple of days in most parts of the state. Hail and unseasonal rain caused similar loss last month.

Aussie town rallies for Indian doctor

Melbourne, 25 Feb (UNI) Hundreds of residents of a New South Wales rural settlement and the surrounding areas protested against the suspension of registration of Indian doctor Dr Balaji Rao. The doctor, who was awarded "Order of Australia" in 1998 for service to the community, is under NSW police investigation for the deaths of two patients at Tocumwal hospital. His registration was suspended last week. The elderly Indian doctor was suspended from his 35-year old practice after NSW Health reported.....

Major fire engulfs highrise in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Feb 26 (UNI) A major fire broke out at an 11-storey building housing two private channels and a newspaper office in the Bangladesh capital today, trapping hundreds of people and forcing two private television channels to abruptly suspend their transmission. Troops were called in aid of the fire fighters to rescue the people who took shelter on the rooftop of the building that also houses a Bengali daily besides several banks and business offices. Three helicopters were also pressed.....

Russia concerned over possible US strikes on Iran

Moscow, Feb 26 (UNI) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today voiced concern over Washington's statements about possible strikes on Iran. At a cabinet meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told President Vladimir Putin that he is concerned after the forecasts and predictions of US strikes on Iran became frequent. ''In particular, during his recent visit to Australia, US Vice President Dick Cheney mentioned the possibility of strikes and stated that no one should allow Iran to ignore the position.....
