Give remunerative prices to farmers: LS

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) Cutting across political spectrum, members in the Lok Sabha today demanded that remunerative prices be paid to farmers and effective steps taken to control inflation.

The BJP, the TDP and the Left dubbed the General Budget as 'anti-poor' and 'anti-farmer', and said it had bypassed the commonman.

''No permanent solution has been suggested to end the vicious cycle of indebtedness of farmers,'' Mr Kishan Singh Sangwan (BJP) said, resuming the debate on the Budget 2007-08.

He urged the government to give 50 per cent representation to farmers in the Agricultural Price Commission, remunerative prices for their produce and actual market rate to those whose land had been acquired for industrial purposes.

He also demanded that the pension to freedom fighters be extended to their children and the family declared as national freedom fighter family.

Mr R L Jalappa (Cong) said steps should be taken to augment agricultural produce and limit the loan period of farmers to 10 years to make them self-sufficient.

He also called for giving top priority to irrigation.
