EC tightens noose on criminals on poll eve

Lucknow, Mar 14 (UNI) The Election Commission today directed the Uttar Pradesh government not to withdraw cases against persons charged with heinous crimes, which invite more than three years of imprisonment.

In a directive the EC also asked the state government to send by March 20 all the details of such withdrawn cases during the past six months.

The EC further said no such case could be withdrawn in future without its permission.

This is the second EC directive to tighten its noose on criminals, who had been given gunners by the state government. The EC had set March 13 as the deadline for the state government to submit the details.

8 nominations filed on day 2 for phase I of UP poll

Lucknow, Mar 14 (UNI) Altogether eight nomination papers were filed on the second day of the first phase of Uttar Pradesh election, in which polling will be held for 62 assembly seats on April 7. Photo electoral roll in UP before 2009 general election: CEO

Lucknow, Mar 14 (UNI) Election Commission has announced to put in place a comprehensive photo electoral roll in Uttar Pradesh before the 2009 Lok Sabha election. EC clears Big B's ads eulogising Mulayam govt

Lucknow, Mar 14 (UNI) In a setback to Congress in Uttar Pradesh, a state-level screening committee of the Election Commission today cleared four more ads of the ruling Samajwadi Party ahead of State Assembly elections. State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anuj Kumar Bishnoi told reporters here that the screening committee had cleared four more SP ads.
