BJP, outfits arrested for attacking University VC

Tirupati, Mar 14 (UNI) Tension prevailed at Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) here today when 20 activists belonging to the BJP, BJYM and ABVP were arrested for attacking University Vice Chancellor Veena Nobel Das's car. T The activists were protesting the alleged propagation of other religions in the varsity and the recent suicide of a first year post-graduate student K Uma Maheswari in the varsity hostel room.

Police said as many as fifty activists led by the district presidents of BJP, BJYM and ABVP resorted to an agitation against the Vice Chancellor and the hostel management over the alleged harassment of varsity students which led to the death of the student Maheswari, who committed suicide in her hostel room two-days back.

They also alleged that Dr Dass was forcing students to convert to Christianity and Uma was recently converted as a Christian, much against the wishes of her family members.

The situation was under control and police pickets were posted at the varisty campus, police added.

Case filed against two on Chappel visit: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 14 (UNI) The Kerala Assembly was informed today that a case has been registered against a houseboat owner and another person for suppressing information about the recent four-day visit of Indian Cricket team Coach Greg Chappel to Alapuzha. In a written reply, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the case had been registered under Section 7(1)(4)-14 of the Foreigners Act.
