Mumbai, Mar 14 (UNI) International and Indian doctors discussed the use of latest technologies associated with knee and hip replacements at an international conference on 'Arthoplasty - A Millennium Challenge' held here to combat arthritis.
Over 200 Indian doctors, including the top orthopedic surgeons Dr N S Laud, Dr C J Thakkar and Dr S K S Marya and 11 international faculty members comprising Dr Ross Crawford and Dr William Hozack participated in the conference held here yesterday.
The highlight of the conference was the launch of new surgical equipment and products that help enhance Hip and Knee replacement and resurfacing surgeries. Hands-on workshops ensured that every attending surgeon had a chance to grasp the new technology and discuss their apprehensions about the same with international doctors, a release here today said.
While international doctors discussed the use of latest technology associated with Knee&Hip replacements, Indian doctors from rural India discussed their understanding of treating arthritis without the use of advanced technology. This conference, therefore, proved to be a learning platform for every attending orthopedic, the release added.
The international surgeons had travelled from US, France, Australia, Japan, Thailand, Korea and Singapore. This gathering allowed doctors of various backgrounds to share their experiences of treating arthritic patients.
Dr Ross Crawford, Orthopedic Surgeon and Researcher, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, said conferences of such latitude are very important for the healthcare fraternity in India where latest technology seems to excite the public and physicians to a great extent.
Commenting on the Indian scenario, Dr N S Laud, Orthopedic Surgeon said, ''There is an increasing rise of physical disability amongst Indians. Around 1.9 per cent of India's population has physical or sensory disabilities. Our act of daily living, lack of awareness about diseases, the ageing processes of our bodies and increased stress is leading to the rise of patients suffering from arthritis in the country''.
