Villagers stage protest against land acquisition

Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, Mar 13 (UNI) Protesting against the government's move to acquire over 1500 acres of land for setting up an industrial estate in their village, the villagers of Thervai today resorted to a novel protest by not sending their children to Panchayat Union Elementary schools and Government High School.

Official sources said the government was planning to set up an industrial estate of the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) and the Sub-Registrar had ordered that no one should sell or purchase land in the village without government's consent.

As part of their protest, the villagers also forcibly closed down a Indian Made Foreign Liquor retail shop.

The villagers told the revenue officials, who rushed to the spot, that they would continue with their agitation until the District Collector concerned gave them a written assurance in this regard.

US report cites serious problems on India's rights front

Completion of Phase-I Godavari water project by 2009

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) A review meeting called by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today decided that the Phase-I Project of diverting Godavari water to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad would be completed by 2009. Kathmandu, Mar 7 (UNI) Nepal's Civil Society for Peace and Democracy today urged the government to initiate action against King Gyanendra for suppressing peaceful demonstration against his dictatorial rule last year.
