Two associates of Poojari arrested

Mumbai, Mar 13 (UNI) In a major breakthrough, the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of city police has arrested two close associates of underworld don Ravi Poojari.

Addressing mediapersons here today, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dhananjay Kamlakar said acting on a tip-off, the AEC team, headed by Vijay Salaskar, arrested Rahul alias Bhiku Ramakant Jadhav (31), who was associated with Ravi Poojari for last 10 years but apprehended for the first time.

Rahul was arrested on March 1 near Sandeep Hotel at Mulund in North-East Mumbai.

During interrogation, he confessed that he used to provide all information including address and telephone numbers of businessmen and other high profile persons' to Poojari.

The accused also admitted that he was involved in firing at a businessman at Dombivali, owner of furniture store, President of Dombivali builders association and in the Khar firing case.

In another prize catch, AEC team nabbed another Poojari associate Govind Krishna Patil (36) from Nehru Nagar, Kurla, yesterday.

Police seized two revolvers and three live cartridges from his possession, Kamlakar said.

The duo was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S Y Shisode, who remanded them to Police custody till March 20, he added.

Meanwhile, a crime branch team arrested notorious gangster Ganesh Sawant (38), associated with underworld don D K Rao. He was arrested outside Arthur Road Jail yesterday. A revolver and three live cartridges were recovered from his possession. He used to meet Rao in the jail. Four cases of extortion, attempt to murder and murder have been registered against him in the city.

A local court remanded him to police custody till march 20.

Human rights activist opposes death penalty for blast convicts

Mumbai, Mar 13 (UNI) A human rights activist today moved the designated TADA court here, opposing the CBI plea to award the death sentence to 44 people convicted in the 1993 serial blasts case. Adv Sushan Kunjuraman, a human rights activist, today wrote letters to judge P D Kode and the Bombay High Court Chief Justice and contended that as per the law in one criminal trial, the court cannot award two punishments to an offender like death penalty and life.....

Traffic resumes partially on J-K national highway

Srinagar, Mar 2 (UNI) Traffic was partially resumed today on the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu national highway after being suspended for 10 days due to landslides and shooting of stones. A traffic police official told UNI that stranded vehicles from Jammu were allowed to proceed towards Srinagar after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, repaired the damaged portion. Almost all the stranded passengers' vehicles have crossed Penthal, the most troubled spot on the highway, till this afternoon,.....

Police rescues eleven children, arrests three

Mumbai, Mar 14 (UNI) As many as eleven children were rescued from a Jari factory in Shivaji Nagar and its three owners arrested today from Govandi in eastern suburbs, in a joint operation by city police and Pratham, a Non-Government Organisation (NGO). The activists of Pratham had received information about the children enganged in the Jari factory in Shivaji Nagar.
