Sri Lankan national gets 10 yrs RI in drug smuggling case

Mumbai, Mar 13 (UNI) A local court today sentenced a Sri Lankan national to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in a 2003 drug smuggling case.

Additional sessions judge P D Bawaskar also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on Udaykumar Abhay Vardhane failing which he will have to undergo an additional rigorous imprisonment of one year.

Acting on a tip-off, the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) had arrested the accused on February 28, 2003 from Mira Road in neighbouring Thane district and seized five kg heroin from him.

The accused had also been arrested in 1995 in a drug smuggling case, but was acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence.

Blasts convicts seek relief under POA

Mumbai, Mar 13 (UNI) Sixty nine convicts in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case today sought relief under the Probation of Offenders Act (POA), contending they were first-time offenders and had already spent a long time in jail. Resuming arguments before designated TADA judge Pramod D Kode, their lawyer Mustaq Ahmed said most of his clients are educated people with good family background and had no criminal record before their involvement in the blasts which rocked the metropolis on March.....

PHDCCI opposes hike in minimum wages in Haryana

Chandigarh, Mar 2 (UNI) Opposing the recent announcement of a hike in minimum wages in Haryana, PHDCCI Secretary General Krishan Kalra today urged the state government to withdraw the proposal. Addressing a press conference here, Mr Kalra appealed to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for adopting a practical approach that ''takes care of the paying capacity of the smallest employer in industry and small business enterprises.'' Haryana, he said, should fix minimum wages broadly in tune with the current wages.....
