Ranbaxy says bid for Merck unit

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) Pharam major Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd today announced that it has placed a non-binding bid for the generics business of Germany's Merck.

The firm, however, did not disclose the size of the deal terming the value to be ''fair and reasonable.'' ''We are looking to evaluate the asset and are going to be very practical about it. We are not in a rat race for acquisitions but are focused on creating value for our shareholders,'' Ranbaxy CEO and MD Malvinder Singh said.

''The figure of six billion dollars mentioned in media reports is factually incorrect and speculative,'' the firm added.

Darmstadt-based Merck is the world's oldest pharmaceuticals company.

Iceland's Actavis, Germany's Stada Arzneimittel AG, the US-based Mylan Laboratories Inc, Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd and Apax Partners are reportedly in race for the firm's.

Tag Heuer in talks with Reliance, Pantaloon for luxury retail

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) Luxury watch and jewellery maker Tag Heuer is in talks with major players like Reliance, Pantaloon, DLF and Shoppers's Stop for a retail tie-up in India and will set up 30 mono-brand boutiques by year-end on a franchise basis. MRPL appoints Dewangan as Director

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) today named Mr V K Dewangan, Deputy Secretary (E-I), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, as Director of the company. Iran storm kills 5, including 3 babies: Radio

Tehran, Mar 17:  Three babies choked to death when a sand storm swept through an Iranian desert city yesterday night, state radio and a senior official said today.Two other people also died when winds of 130 km per hour bore down on Bam in southeastern Iran, the city's governor told the radio. Bam was hit by a major earth quake that killed 31,000 people in 2003.Fourteen people were injured in the storm, which also caused extensive material damage and cut off.....
