Rajan associate surrenders before the court

Mumbai, Mar 13 (UNI) Vinod Asrani, a close associate of underworld don Chhota Rajan, surrendered before the MCOCA court today.

He was allegedly involved in an extortion case of 2005 at Chembur in eastern suburbs.

Police said Asrani alias Chembur was arrested earlier in the extortion case in which Sujata Nikhalji, wife of Chhota Rajan, his elder brother, a chartered accountant and two others were arrested. All the accused are presently in custody.

Asrani had moved an application in the Supreme Court, which had granted interim relief to him till disposal of his petition.

Recently, the Apex Court had rejected his petition and since then he was absconding.

After two weeks, he surrendered before MCOCA (Maharashtra Control for Organised Crime Act) Judge Abhay Thipsay, who is presiding over the case. The court remanded him to Judicial custody till March 20.

In November 2005, Ms Sujata and others were arrested by the Crime Branch on charges of demanding extortion money of Rs 10 lakh from a builder.

Traffic resumes partially on J-K national highway

Srinagar, Mar 2 (UNI) Traffic was partially resumed today on the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu national highway after being suspended for 10 days due to landslides and shooting of stones. A traffic police official told UNI that stranded vehicles from Jammu were allowed to proceed towards Srinagar after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, repaired the damaged portion. Almost all the stranded passengers' vehicles have crossed Penthal, the most troubled spot on the highway, till this afternoon,.....

Police rescues eleven children, arrests three

Mumbai, Mar 14 (UNI) As many as eleven children were rescued from a Jari factory in Shivaji Nagar and its three owners arrested today from Govandi in eastern suburbs, in a joint operation by city police and Pratham, a Non-Government Organisation (NGO). The activists of Pratham had received information about the children enganged in the Jari factory in Shivaji Nagar. With the help of local police, a raid was conducted at around 1300 hours today and 11 children were rescued and.....

Varanasi, Mar 2 (UNI) Security has been stepped up in the holy city following the receipt of a letter purportedly sent by terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba, which has threatened to wreak havoc on Holi in Varanasi and Lucknow. The hand-written inland letter received by the alumni cell of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) last evening has allegedly been authored by an LeT operative of Jammu.
