Over 100 students expelled in Board exams

Shillong, Mar 13 (UNI) Over 100 students appearing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations have been expelled in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district for using in unfair means during the ongoing examinations.

''We have expelled more than 100 students for using unfair means to qualify the exams,'' state's West Garo district Deputy Commissioner P Sampath Kumar told UNI here over the phone from Tura today.

Mr Kumar said most of the students in the plain belt areas - Rajabala, Phulbari and Tikrikilla were indulging in malpractices while writing their exams.

''We have installed video cameras in some of these examination centres to thwart these illegal means of passing an examination,'' Mr Kumar said, adding that additional police personnel have been pressed in all examination centres located in the plain belt region.

Mr Kumar said he has also issued a stern warning to school managements that such instances would not be tolerated and there is every possibility of such centres being closed down.

Meanwhile, a group of expelled students leading a mob of over 200 people converged on the premises of Selsella Secondary School Examination Centre and physically assaulted a senior Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education official on yesterday.

Mr Kumar said the incident took place shortly after Assistant Director of the Board, Tammy Laloo, expelled 12 students for malpractices during the examination at Selsella School.

Meanwhile, he had condemned the attack on the Board official saying that, ''Students who indulge in such means cannot be pardoned.'' UNI

Ailing HC chairman Geelani being taken to US for treatment

Sriangar, Mar 11 (UNI) Ailing Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC), will be taken to the United Statesfor specialised treatment. Mr Geelani, suffering from cancer, his wife and son were given passports by the Regional Passport Office (RPO), here, on the directions from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, following appeals by the Hurriyat Conference and a number of mainstream and separatist leaders. Their passports were sent from here to Delhi yesterday, a spokesman of the HC Aiyaz.....

Speaker distributes laptop to 60 legislators

Shillong, Mar 13 (UNI) Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo has distributed laptops to 60 legislators of the state. Mr Danggo said the initiative was taken so that the legislators would not lag behind in terms of computer literacy. Information Technology Minister Robert Garnet Lyngdoh, elated by Mr Danggo's initiative, said, ''Our Speaker is making serious efforts to make the legislators acquainted with the latest Information Technology.'' He said the legislators should also permeate their experience in this field.....

Awareness will help fight polio: Khanduri

Dehra Dun, Mar 11 (UNI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri today urged the people to join hands to fight the polio menace in the state and underscored the need of an awareness campaign to curb the disease. ''The people should involve themselves in the door-to-door polio campaign which will help in the eradication of the disease,'' the Chief Minister said while visiting the Doon Hospital to administer polio drops to children. Earlier, Governor Sudarshan Agarwal initiated the Polio Eradication.....
