Life imprisonment to six convicts in Municipal chairman murder case

Barasat, Mar 13 (UNI) The Additional District and Sessions Judge has awarded life imprisonment to six people in connection with the Dum Dum Municipality chairman murder case.

Additional District and Sessions judge Sunil Chandra Barai, convicted six of the 12 accused in the Sailen Das murder cases yesterday.

He found them guilty under Sections 120B, 302/120B IPC and awarded life imprisonment and fined Rs 2000 each.

Earlier, the judge heard all the six convicts, including the prime accused, a former Dum Dum Municpality chairman before declaring the sentences.

The judge also released Bachhan Singh who turned approver. Singh was also kept in the custody till date.

Dum Dum Municipality Chairman Dr Sailen Das, a former MLA, was killed near his residence under Dum Dum Police station in North 24 Parganas on August 13 six years back.

During the proceedings of the court today, wife of the late chairman, Ms Kanan Das, along with his son and daughter-in-law, heard the judgement and expressed happiness that the culprits were given proper punishment by the court.

Jamshedpur, Mar 13 (UNI) After arresting eight people, including two Maoists, involved in the Jamshedpur MP Sunil Mahto Murder case yesterday, police today issued the skecthes of naxalites. Police said the raids in the naxalite-affected areas under Ghatshila subdivison were being carried out to nab the ultras. New Chief Secretary, DGP for Punjab

Chandigarh, Mar 2 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, who assumed office today, replaced the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP). Mr Ramesh Inder Singh, a 1972 batch IAS officer was today appointed Punjab Chief Secretary, replacing Mr K R Lakhpal. Mr Singh is currently on deputation with the Centre and attended Mr Badal's oath taking ceremony. Mr Singh had served as Principal Secretary to Mr Badal, when he was Chief Minister from 1997 to 2002.
