HC suspends 7-yr RI to 25 accused in bus burning case

Chennai, Mar 13 (UNI) Madras High Court today suspended a lower court sentence awarding seven-year rigorous imprisonment to 25 accused in the sensational Dharmapuri bus burning case in which three girl students of Coimbatore Agriculture Universtiy were burnt alive.

A Division Bench, comprising Mr Justice R Balasubramaniam and Ms Justice Prabha Sridevan, suspended the sentence awarded to AIADMK men D K Rajendran, D K Murugesan and 23 others by the First Additional Sessions Judge, Salem.

The Bench also granted them bail on the condition that they should stay in Chennai and report daily to the Crime Branch CID.

The First Additional Sessions Judge, Salem, had on February 16 awarded death sentence to three prime accused and seven-year RI to 25 others.

Among the three who were awarded capital punishment, one had already filed an appeal against the sentence, while the other two were expected to file their appeals today.

It may be recalled that a Special Court in Chennai awarded one-year RI to AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the Pleasant Stay Hotel case in February 2000.

Following this, violence broke out throught out Tamil Nadu and in one such incident, a college bus was set fire in Dharmapuri in which the girls were burnt alive.

Railways get complaints of unhygienic food served in trains

New Delhi, Mar 2 (UNI) The Railway Ministry has received complaints of unhygienic food served in trains, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Out of 1826 complaints received in 2006-07 till December, 128 related to unhygienic food, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said in a written reply. He said reputed caterers and private companies in catering/hospitality business are invited to participate in the bidding process for award of contract for comprehensive on board catering services. CBI conducts raids in false insurance claim case

Tiruchirapalli, Mar 13 (UNI) Sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted raids at several places here, including the office premises of leading advocates, in connection with the fake insurance claim racket. According to reliable sources, the CBI sleuths led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Krishnamurthy searched several places including the residence and office premises of advocates and insurance agents. HC directs TDB to remove hoardings from temple compounds

Kochi, Mar 13 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to remove the hoardings located inside the temple compounds. A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice M N Krishnan observed that exhibits of advertisements inside the temple compounds were violating the sentiments of the devotees and their beliefs.
