'Gujarat assembly reminds of jungle raj'

Ahmedabad, Mar 12 (UNI) Speakers at a seminar on Parliamentary Democracy in Gujarat'' today lamented that happenings in the Gujarat Assembly reminded one of ''Jungle Raj''.

''When students of political science visit the state assembly, we teachers feel ashamed because of the commotion prevailing in the House,'' political scientist Dinesh Shukla said while participating in the seminar.

''What we teach as parliamentary democracy in political science, we find the reality completely different,'' he rued.

''Culture is the genesis of democracy, which is missing in Gujarat,'' Jan Vikas managing trustee Gagan Sethi said.

Human rights activist Adv Mukul Sinha, speaking on the occasion, remarked that the 2002 riots were a sour wound and its stench was still pervasive.

The seminar was hosted jointly by People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Insaf Trust, Nishane Savidhan and Punuruththan.

Man drowns in river

Kolhapur, Mar 12 (UNI) A bullock-cart owner, accompanied by his bullock, fell into Vedgaonga river of this district while crossing a bandhara and lost life. Police said, the deceased, Namdev Patil from Gormbe village in Kagal tehsil, was on his way back to a field after disloading sugarcane to the Sadashivrao Mandalik Co-operative Sugar Factory at Hamidwada when the mishap took place yesterday. Passenger association demands stoppage of trains at Anand

Anand, Mar 12 (UNI) The Railway Passengers Sangarsh Samiti and former President of Anand city M G Gujarati today submitted a memorandum to Western Railway General Manager Jinran demanding that Ajmer Express and Okha-Puri Express be stopped at Anand Railway station. They submitted their memorandum to Mr Jinran, who was here on inspection. Their other demands included construction of a flyover connecting railway godown and Parikh Bhavan and extension of Ahmedabad-Godhra train to Dahod. UNI.....

NCP ahead in ZP elections in Pune district

Pune, Mar 12 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is forging ahead in this district having won 20 seats followed by Congress three seats, Shiv Sena 2 seats, BJP 1 seat, JD 1 seat and Independent 1 seat of the 75 seats to Zilla Parishad(ZP).
