Disaster Management Authority constituted

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 13 (UNI) A nine-member State Diasaster Management Authority with Chief Minister as Chairman has been constituted in Kerala as per the Central Act to coordinate relief measures in the event of natural calamities, Revenue Minister K P Rajendran told the State Assembly today.

Replying to a Calling Attenton motion by Mr K B Ganesh Kumar (KC-B), he said formation of the Authority would also help speed up compensation to victims of natural calamities.

Replying to another Calling Attention by Mr A A Aziz (RSP), Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac said working capital would be made available through banks to cashew factories run by the State Cashew Development Corporation and cashew cooperatives.

Responding to a submission by Mr K C Venugopal (Cong), Education Minister M A Baby said Principal Secretary to General Education had been entrusted to report measures for the smooth conduct of examinations under the Sarva Shiksha Abhyan programme.

AP capital all set to undergo further changes: YSR

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said the state capital was set for further changes in the next two years with the opening of the new International Airport, Metro Rail and Outer Ring Road. Hyderabad had achieved 52 per cent growth in software exports in last three consecutive years, he noted and urged Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia-designate Ashok K Kantha, who called on him today, to explore the possibilities of potential Malaysian investments.....

Human Rights record of Bangladesh is poor: US

Dhaka, Mar 7 (UNI) The US has said Human Rights record of Bangladesh remained poor because of numerous serious abuses like extra-judicial killing, arbitrary arrest and detention and politically-motivated violence. The US Country Reports on Human Rights Practices 2006, released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour in Washington todaym, carried these observations about the status of Bangladesh on the Human Rights score. It alleged security forces acted with impunity, and committed acts of physical and psychological torture......

Journalist arrested in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Mar 7 (UNI) The Bangladesh Army arrested Bengali daily ''Janakantha'' editor and businessman Atiqullah Khan Masud from his office here tonight. Earlier, the army-led joint forces arrested Managing Director of private television channel NTV Enayetur Rahim. Later he was sent to Dhaka central jail. Although the authorities did not disclose the reasons behind their arrests, it is believed that corruption could be one of the reasons. Since the promulgation of the state of emergency, the interim government has rounded up.....
