DAN loses one seat in bypolls, Congress gains one

Kohima, Mar 13 (UNI) The ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) lost one seat while the Opposition Congress gained one in the Dimapur-I and Tuensang Sadar-II constituency bypolls.

With the results being declared yesterday, Congress candidate Kejong Chang was elected from Tuensang Sadar-II and Atomi Zhimomi of the NPF from Dimapur-I.

The present party position after the by-elections was Nagaland Peoples Front(NPF) 32, BJP five, the JD(U) two and Independent four while the members of the Opposition Congress rose to 17 from 16.

The number of the BJP members in the Nagaland Assembly reduced from seven to five with the party losing two seats in both the Assembly constituencies, polling for which were held on March 8.

Atomi Zhimomi would be the first member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly to sit along with father Khekiho Zhimomi, presently holding the Industry and Commerce Ministry portfolio.

Awareness will help fight polio: Khanduri

Dehra Dun, Mar 11 (UNI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri today urged the people to join hands to fight the polio menace in the state and underscored the need of an awareness campaign to curb the disease. ''The people should involve themselves in the door-to-door polio campaign which will help in the eradication of the disease,'' the Chief Minister said while visiting the Doon Hospital to administer polio drops to children. Earlier, Governor Sudarshan Agarwal initiated the Polio Eradication.....

Farooq Sheikh walks Varanasi's bylanes against polio

Varanasi, Mar 11 (UNI) Critically acclaimed film personality Farooq Sheikh, in his 'avtaar' as UNICEF goodwill ambassador, today walked through the serpentine alleys here to streamline efforts aimed at eradicating the crippling polio virus. The star, who has worked with seasoned film-directors like Satyajit Ray and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, spearheaded a team of the UNICEF and health department workers to administer the pulse polio drops to those aged upto five years. He also strived to wipe out misconceptions preventing the success.....

Rally to protest boy's killing

Imphal, March 13 (UNI) A rally was taken out here today to protest the killing of an eight-year-old boy yesterday. The eight-year-old boy was identified as Chinglenkhomba. He was found murdered last evening at Pishum Chinga Macha. Police said no one was arrested so far. A gold ring, worn by the boy, was missing and he bore wound marks on his neck the police said. MLA L Jayenta and others have strongly condemned the killing and termed it barbaric......
