Completion of Phase-I Godavari water project by 2009

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) A review meeting called by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today decided that the Phase-I Project of diverting Godavari water to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad would be completed by 2009.

Tenders for the project would be invited by this year end, after studying the project report.

The Water and Power Consultancy Services Limited (WAPCOS), a Government of India Undertaking, entrusted with the feasibility of the project made a presentation to the Chief Minister.

According to WAPCOS, the projected drinking water requirement for the city would be about 30 TMC by 2031, excluding the water now available from the existing drinking water sources.

To meet this requirement of 30 TMC, WAPCOS suggested drawing of 7.33 TMC of water under the I Phase of the Project at the rate of 120 million gallons per day (MGD). Water could be tapped from Yellampalli at Sripada Sagar Reservoir.

Chechen President nominates candidate for new Prime Minister

Pakistani, Indian officials to meet to pave way for Singh's visit

Islamabad, Mar 8 (UNI) Indian and Pakistani officials are likely to meet in the next couple of days as part of the back channel diplomacy to pave the way for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Pakistan ahead of a SAARC summit in New Delhi. Russian women dissatisfied with their role in politics

Moscow, Mar 8 (UNI) Russian women today expressed dissatisfaction on their ''very thin'' participation in the national politics, despite the Constitution granting them equal rights with men. On the occasion of the International Women's Day, they said Russia ranks 80th in the world as regards number of female members in the parliament's lower house, the State Duma. Women represent only 10 per cent of the 450-member lower house of the Russian parliament. Women occupy a meagre five per cent of seats.....
