Budget session to begin tomorrow

Bangalore, Mar 13 (UNI) The budget session of the Karnataka Legislature will begin here tomorrow, with Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who also holds the Finance portfolio, scheduled to present the budget in the Assembly on March 16.

The 16-day session was expected to be stormy as the Opposition Congress was hellbent on putting the ruling coalition of JD(S)-BJP on the mat on various issues such as drought, winding up of judicial commission on alleged mining irregularities and referring the issue to the Lok Ayukta.

The session, originally slated to begin on March 16, had been advanced by two days and the first two days were likely to witness clearance of pending bills and other discussions, including the recent final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal on sharing of water by the riparian States.

In the Council, the message sent by Governor T N Chaturvedi with regard to holding of election to the Chairman's post would be read out.

Adulteration of petrol not ruled out: Govt

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) The government today said the adulteration of petrol through retail outlets cannot be ruled out due to the huge price difference between petrol/diesel and various adulterants including Kerosone available in the market. The government admitted that there had been high incidents of short delivery of fuels in 2006-07. To check adulteration in auto fuels and diversion of PDS kerosene, government has asked Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to take various steps to contain adulteration, Minister of State.....

LS adjourned for third time over Left protest against Bill

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) The issue of introduction of the Indian Maritime University Bill, 2007, rocked the Lok Sabha today, leading to a third adjournment of the House for an hour till 1400 hrs. As the House re-assembled at 1300 hrs, after the second adjournment over the issue, members from the Left parties resumed their noisy protests, leading the Chair to adjourn the House for an hour till 1400 hrs. Earlier, the House had witnessed two adjournments as a scuffle.....

School drop out rate declines: Purandeswari

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) The Union Human Resources Development Ministry today said the dropout rate of children in schools has come down by 15 per cent due to several new initiatives launched by the government. ''Figures show that there is a general downward trend in dropout rates in primary, middle and secondary level,'' Minister of State in the Ministry D Purandeswari told the Lok Sabha. Replying to questions, she said the access of girls to elementary schooling was being enhanced.....
