AP to take up minor irrigation works in a big way

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Government today announced it would take up Rs 2,800 crore worth minor irrigation works with the assistance of, among other agencies, the World Bank and the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation.

Addressing a press conference here, State Minor Irrigation Minister S Vijayarama Raju said under the Prime Minister's special package for the 16 suicide-prone districts, another Rs 1,331 crore had been sanctioned by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) for minor irrigation works.

For the first time, the Centre had sanctioned Rs 168 crore, including Rs 110 crore grant, for taking up minor irrigation projects in the state under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme.

Large scale restoration of 66,000 minor irrigation tanks, hitherto under the Panchayatraj Department, would be revived over next four to five years, he added.

Pakistan warns befitting response against any attempted hot pursui

Islamabad, Mar 5 (UNI) Pakistan today warned that any attempt of indulging in hot pursuit against it would be met with a befitting response. IMD to install 53 short-range Doppler Weather Radars

Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Mar 13 (UNI) The Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) is planning to install 53 short-range Doppler Weather Radars in all important meteorology centres in the country in the next two years in a phased manner, a top official today said. Talking to UNI here, IMD Director Y K Reddy said the Doppler Weather Radars were capable of round-the-clock weather obeservation and aviation-related operations within a 250 km range. One more killed in south Thailand, govt plans tough tactics

Bangkok, Mar 5 (UNI) Suspected Islamic militants shot dead a rubber plantation worker and injured a married couple in simultaneous drive-by attacks in the southern Thailand border province of Yala this morning. The victims, on motorcycle, were on their way to work on rubber farms. The attacks follow last week's similar killing of two female university students in the troubled region where more than 2,000 people have died in separatist attacks in the past three years.
