Akshaya project to be introduced in all dists in one year

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 13 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today told the Assembly that the prestigious computer literacy project, 'Akshaya,' will be launched in all the districts of the state within one year.

Replying to questions by Mr Raju Abraham (CPI-M) and others, he said the government was taking all necessary steps to spread the ambitious project in all the remaining districts within a year.

Started as a pilot project in Malappuram district, the computer learning project, aimed at providing computer knowledge to one member in each family across the state, was later introduced in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts, he informed.

Mr Achuthanandan claimed that in Malappuram district one member in almost all the families had received its benefit, besides another 10 lakh people in other seven districts.

The government would consider providing financial assistance to Akshya centers, if the Union Government provide such assistance, he said adding that if necessary the government would think about introducing the project at ward level in the panchayats.

Since the free software was comparatively cheaper, the government would encourage its usage, the Chief Minister said.

3 powerful landmines unearthed in AP

Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, Mar 13 (UNI) The police today unearthed three high powerful landmines between Sathagogu and Akkapalem Villages of Pullalacheruvu Mandal of Prakasham District. The police detected the landmines each carrying 20 to 25 kg explosievs during combing operations and de-activated them immediately. Police said the landmines might have been targeted at policemen on duty for the Legislative Council elections. UNI.....

Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, Mar 13 (UNI) Police today arrested a top CPI (Maoist) Leader near the Komarti Village of Narasannapet Mandal of the district today. Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested CPI (Maoist) Central Comittee Member G Prasad when he came to the village to meet his family members and relatives. Adulteration of petrol not ruled out: Govt

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) The government today said the adulteration of petrol through retail outlets cannot be ruled out due to the huge price difference between petrol/diesel and various adulterants including Kerosone available in the market. The government admitted that there had been high incidents of short delivery of fuels in 2006-07. To check adulteration in auto fuels and diversion of PDS kerosene, government has asked Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to take various steps to contain adulteration, Minister of State.....
