Six persons jailed for murdering municipality chairman

Barasat, Mar 12 (UNI) Sudhir Bhattacharya, the political guru of many CPI(M) stalwarts in West Bengal, with five other accused were sent to jail by additional District and Sessions court in a murder case here today.

Former municipalty chairman and politician Mr Bhattacharya and five of his associates had shot dead Dum Dum municipality chairman Sailen Sas on August 13, 2001.

Police said about 12 people were arrested in this regard.

Additional district and session Judge Sunil Chandra Barai while announcing the verdict held the prime accused Mr Bhattacharya and his associates guilty under sections 120B, 302, 120, 34 IPC.

The final hearing of the accused would be held tommorow.

Six found guilty of murder of municipality chairman

Barasat, Mar 12 (UNI) A Sessions court today found six people guilty of murdering Dum Dum Municipality chairman Sailen Das in 2001. The court held the six guilty under different sections of the Indian Penal Code and would pronounce the sentence tomorrow. However, the court acquitted four others in the case. Former Municipality Chairman and politician Sudhir Bhattacharya were among the six found guilty of murdering Dum Dum Municipality Chairman Sailen Das on August 13, 2001. UNI.....

Traffic Police Kashmir books 1544 for violations

Srinagar, Feb 25 (UNI) The Traffic Police, in a special drive to curb traffic violations, has booked 1544 traffic violators during last ten days, an official spokesman said today. He said an amount of Rs 1.18 lakh was also recovered as fine from the offenders. He said 209 offenders were booked for not using a seat belt, 115 for driving without license, 47 for dangerous driving, 112 for not having Pollution Under Control Certificate, 175 for overloading in passenger vehicles.....

Sentence in St Stephen's college girl murder case on Mar 15

New Delhi, Mar 12 (UNI) A fast track court in the city today fixed March 15 for pronouncing the quantum of punishment in a case in which a girl from capital's prestigious St Stephen's college was murdered by a tutor in April 1999. Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar fixed March 15 for pronouncing the sentence in the seven-year-old case, after arguments over quantum of punishment ended today. Terming the murder as 'gruesome', the prosecution described the death as an exemplary punishment.....
