Journalists agitate against scribes' arrest

Udupi, Mar 12 (UNI) Members of the Udupi District Working Journalists Union today staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office against the arrest of Karavali group of publications chief B V Seetharam and his wife on March three in Mangalore.

Union President Dinesh Kini, addressing the members, alleged that the arrests were ''politically motivated''. The recent incidents of attacks on media houses were nothing, but efforts to suppress the freedom of Press.

Urging the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court to immediately intervene in the issue and render justice, he demanded that the State Government hold a detailed inquiry into all cases of attacks on media persons and media offices.

Later, the agitators submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, to be forwarded to the Chief Minister.

Five people killed in two road mishaps

Mandya, Karnataka, Mar 12 (UNI) Five people, including a child, were killed on the spot and nine injured in two road mishaps near Mandya district of Karnataka, today. Police said two people were killed and nine injured when a private bus turned turtle on the Bangalore-Mysore State Highway, near here. The victims were a bus passenger and conductor. Badal suspends official for questioning woman in police station

Chandigarh, Mar 16 (UNI) The Punjab government has placed under suspension a Station House Officer (SHO) for summoning a woman wanted in a theft case to the police station. The SHO's action was a direct violation of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's order, not to summon women wanted in cases to police stations, an official release today stated. Karnataka may have to wage war for water: Expert

Bangalore, Mar 12 (UNI) Karnataka may have to wage 'War for Water' if the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was implemented, an irrigation expert opined today.
