Five people killed in two road mishaps

Mandya, Karnataka, Mar 12 (UNI) Five people, including a child, were killed on the spot and nine injured in two road mishaps near Mandya district of Karnataka, today.

Police said two people were killed and nine injured when a private bus turned turtle on the Bangalore-Mysore State Highway, near here.

The victims were a bus passenger and conductor. The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital in Mandya.

In the other incident, a couple and their child riding on a scooter were fatally knocked down by a speeding lorry on the highway at Hindwadi, near here.

Karnataka may have to wage war for water: Expert

Bangalore, Mar 12 (UNI) Karnataka may have to wage 'War for Water' if the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was implemented, an irrigation expert opined today. Kabir Samman for Achyutan Nambudiri

Bhopal, Mar 16 (UNI) Eminent Malyalam poet Achyutan Nambudiri will be conferred the 2006-07 Rashtriya Kabir Samman given by the Madhya Pradesh government. Culture Minister Lakshmikant Sharma told reporters here that Nambudari, who hails from Palakkad in Kerala, will receive a cash component of Rs 1.50 lakh and a citation as a part of the award. He said New Delhi's Bishan Tandon will be bestowed with the national Sharad Joshi Samman to recognise his contribution in the field of journalism.....

Bio-metric passports to be introduced in the country

Shimla, Mar 16 (UNI) Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma today said bio-metric passports will be issued to diplomats and officials from this year for the general public from next year. Speaking to mediapersons before inaugurating a passport office here, he said the facility would simplify security verification as a chip would contain unique identification features of individual passport holders. Mr Sharma said Shimla Passport Office was the 32nd in the country and more offices would soon be opened.....
