Demands by freedom fighters figure in RS

New Delhi, Mar 12 (UNI) Rajya Sabha members from various political parties today raised the issue of the long-pending demands of freedom fighters.

Ms Sushma Swaraj of the BJP said widows of freedom fighters were facing starvation.

Ms Moshina Kidwai of the Congress said the government should form a committee to look into the problems of freedom fighters and come up with a solution with a timeframe. Their health and travelling requirements must be looked after, she said.

Mr Ravula Chandra Sekar Reddy of the Telegu Desam said many of those demonstrating are over 80 years of age and have not got any monetary benefits despite assurances from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri said he would convey the concerns of members to the Home Minister. He was hopeful that the government would take immediate steps to resolve the problems.
