Cauvery cauldron continues to boil

Mysore, Mar 12 (UNI) Dharnas, processions and relay hunger strikes continued in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagara in Karnataka against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal for the 36th day today.

In Mandya, the Petrol Bunk Owners Association, led by Mr S M Shankar, MLC, took out a procession and submitted a memorandum at the Deputy Commissioner's office. Women college students also joined them to protest the verdict. The relay hunger strike by the Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi members continued at Maddur, Srirangapatna, Pandavapura, Mallavali and K R Pet.

In Mysore, various Kannada organisations staged a dharna under the banner of Cauvery Kriya Samithi.

In Chamarajanagara, noted Kannada film Director Mahendra and his actress wife Sruthi participated in a protest rally at Yelanadur village.

Journalists organise dharna

Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Mar 12 (UNI) Hundreds of journalists today organised a massive rally at Kovvuru town in West Godavari district near here, in protest against the attacks on mediapersons recently. The journalists, under the aegis of Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) submitted a memorandum to the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Kovvuru. SVIMS to conduct health programme tomorrow

Tirupati, Feb 21 (UNI) The Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams(TTD) run Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) will conduct a day-long lecture programme in its campus tomorrow. New legislation soon to protect paddy fields: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 12 (UNI) Kerala Revenue Minister K P Rajendran told the Assembly today that a new legislation would be brought to plug all loopholes in the Kerala Land Utilisation Act to strictly check conversion of paddy fields for other purposes. Replying to a Calling Attention motion by Mr B Raghavan (CPI-M), he said such a legislation was necessary to protect the remaining paddy fields and sought people's cooperation to discourage filling of paddy fields.
