BJP expresses hope of winning council elections

Hyderabad, Mar 12 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today expressed hope that it would win the ensuing elections to the Legislative Council (LC) from the graduate constituencies.

Addressing a press conference here, Party floor leader in Assembly G Kishan Reddy, city president Prem Singh Rathore and candidate G R Karunakar said the BJP had won six out of the eight graduate constituencies during the last four elections to the LC.

The party had already conducted door-to-door campaigning in the areas where it had candidates.

They said the people would definitely support BJP candidates as they could raise issues of public importance in the Council.

CPI urges CEC to allow parties to issue whip to MLAs

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) The CPI's Andhra Pradesh unit today urged the Election Commission of India to allow the political parties to issue whips to its MLAs for supporting the candidates contesting the Legislative Council elections, scheduled on March 22. According to a press release here, the CPI State Secretary K Narayana urged the CEC N Gopalaswami to allow the parties to issue whip to curb the ''horse trading'' during the election. He also urged the CEC to adopt the open.....

JD(U) retains Islampur seat

Biharsharif, Mar 14 (UNI) Janata Dal (United) today retained the Islampur assembly seat after defeating the UPA the March 11 bypolls. JD(U) candidate Pratima Sinha secured 42,823 votes, while UPA candidate and CPI leader Rakesh Kumar Roshan got 33,491 votes, official sources said. CPI(ML) candidate Sudhir Kumar scored 5,344 votes while three other candidates lost their deposits. Six candidates were in the fray for the seat. The by-election was necessary in Islampur after JD(U)'s Ram Swaroop Prasad resigned after being elected.....

15 candidates fighting Palamu bypoll

Daltongunj, Mar 14 (UNI) With the withdrawal of three candidates, including JD(U)'s Jitendra Kumar, altogether 15 aspirants are in the fray for the March 29 byelection to Palamu Parliamentary seat. District Electoral Officer Nagendra Prasad Singh here said besides the JD(U) candidate, others, who withdrew were Devmania Devi and Mithilesh Paswan (both Independents). Earlier, nominations of Lalan Bhuiyan (Samata Party), Parasnath Manjhi of the Manav Mukti Morcha and Brahmdeo Ram (Independent) were cancelled. Counting would be held on April one. Prominent.....
