New Delhi, Mar 12 (UNI) The Government today said a decline in the arrival of migratory birds in the country has been reported.
Important wetlands are the main winter habitat of migratory birds. These are Bharatpur in Rajasthan, Chilka in Orissa, Etawah and Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, Sultanpur in Haryana and Nalsarover and Kutch in Gujarat.
There a few reports of the migration to some of these wetlands having declined, Minister of state for Environment and Forests Namo Narain Meena told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
He said the government was taking various steps to make the habitat more attractive for the migratory birds.
Important wetlands like Keoladeo, Chilka etc have been declared as protected areas and some migratory bird species have been included in the Schedule of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 to give them legal protection.
Besides, financial and technical assistance was being provided to the state governments under various centrally sponsored schemes for development of habitat of these birds, he said.
Chandoli Sanctuary: Replying to another question, he said Chandli Sanctuary has been declared as a national park in 2004 and following that a number of projects were taken up to improve the place for its inhabitants. These include removal of invading species, soil and water conservation, vaccination of cattle, research, fire tracing, demarcatrion of boundary, development of grassland and procurement of wireless equipment etc.
Power projects: There were 44 power projects which were waiting for environmental clearance, the Minister told the House.
Out of these, 36 were thermal power plants and eight related to hydro power, he said, adding that steps were being taken to expedite the process of their clearance.
