Youth murdered, corporator detained

Kolhapur, Mar 11 (UNI) A youth was mudered and another grievously injured when they were attacked with swords and stones, allegedly by supporters of a corporator, at Sangram Chowk in the powerloom town of Ichalkaranji early today.

The deceased has been identified as Gajanan Raghunath Malvekar, 23 while Rakesh Shetye has been hospitalised with serious injuries, police said.

Four persons, including Ichalkaranji Municipal Council Public Work Committee Chairman Nagesh Patil and his brother Ganesh, have been detained in connection with the murder.

According to the police, a cricket match had been organised in the locality late last evening which continued past midnight.

Gajanan and a few others had objected to the holding of the match so late and this had led to an altercation.

Gajanan was allegedly attacked by supporters of the corporator in which he was killed and Rakesh injured.

Meanwhile, enraged over the murder, the locals went on a rampage today and damaged the residence of Patils, some powerlooms, and a few motor-cycles. They also damaged the equipment of a local TV journalist. Police said the situation in the locality continued to be tense but was under control.

Mob attacks polling booth in Thane

Thane, Mar 11 (UNI) The otherwise peaceful elections to the zilla parishad and panchayat samiti in this district were marred when a mob attacked officials at a polling booth in Sonave village of Palghar taluka at the fag end of polling today. Following the incident, additional police force has been rushed to the village from the district headquarters, the police said. Anti-Sanjay Dutt pleas come up tomorrow

Mumbai, Mar 11 (UNI) The TADA court will hear three important applications tomorrow impacting the fate of Bollywood film star Sanjay Dutt, one of the 100 people found guilty in the serial bomb blasts that rocked the country's financial and entertainment capital 14 years ago. Having reserved an order on the actor's plea seeking relief under the Probation of Offenders Act (POA), the designated court judge Pramod Kode will take up application of an intervener who has opposed granting relief.....
