Policeman arrested for smuggling pistol cartridges

Dehra Dun, Mar 11 (UNI) A policeman was today arrested for allegedly smuggling live pistol cartridges from a police armoury and selling them to anti-social elements.

According to police sources, on receiving a tip off, a decoy customer was deployed to trap Govindram, a Head Armour in Police Line Armoury, involved in smuggling cartridges from the armoury.

The decoy called him, demanding supply of cartridges at a prescribed place last night. As soon as he reached the place he was nabbed by a police team. Nineteen live cartridges of 30 bore pistol were recovered from him.

He was arrested under Arms Act.

Further interrogation revealed that Govindram was also involved in disposing off cartridges to anti-social elements, meant for firing practices, when he was a coach of the police firing team earlier.

Robbers decamp with gold, valuables from journo's house

Chennai, Mar 11 (UNI) Unidentified men gained entry into a locked house by removing a window grill at suburban Madurayoyal and decamped with 55 sovereigns of gold ornaments and other valuables. Police said, Mr Dhanasekaran who was the Chief Editor of a popular Tamil daily, had gone to Madurai on March eight along with his family members. When they returned home this morning, the grill of one of the windows was found removed and the house and steel almirahs ransacked......

Varsity notice to professor on 'fund scam'

Visakhapatnam, Mar 11 (UNI) The Andhra University (AU) Executive Council today decided to issue a notice to Population Research Centre Former Director M Vivekananda Murthy in connection with misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 98 lakh. According to an AU press release here, the Executive Council meeting held under the Chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Venugopal Reddy decided to serve a notice to Prof Murthy for an explanation.
