Mob attacks polling booth in Thane

Thane, Mar 11 (UNI) The otherwise peaceful elections to the zilla parishad and panchayat samiti in this district were marred when a mob attacked officials at a polling booth in Sonave village of Palghar taluka at the fag end of polling today.

Following the incident, additional police force has been rushed to the village from the district headquarters, the police said.

District Superintendent of Police (Rural) Archana Tyagi has also rushed to the spot.

District Collector S S Zende said there had been some problem in Sonave but a detailed report from the police was awaited.

According to Saphale police, a 100-strong mob raided the polling booth, ransacked it, and manhandled the staff, police and the home guards on duty. Two policemen were injured in the incident.

An offence of rioting has been registered but no arrests have been made so far.

Gujarat moved to Northern grid

Gandhinagar, Mar 2 (UNI) Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabh Dalal today informed the state assembly that the Central Government's decision to move the State from Western Power Grid to the Northern Grid has imposed a burden to the state treasury of Rs 614 crore because of cut in power supply by 208 MW. The power cut of 208 MW had forced the Gujarat Government to buy eletricity from private sources at a cost of Rs 6 per unit, instead of Rs 1.68.....
