Meghalaya budget session begins tommorrow

Shillong, Mar 11 (UNI) Veteran Congress leader Donwa Dethwelson Lapang tomorrow will enter the Meghalaya Assembly again as a Chief Minister after his predecessor J D Rymbai quit office yesterday.

Mr Rymbai, who was defiant for the past five days to Congress president Sonia Gandhi's directive to step down, yesterday put in his paper ending five days of high political drama in this political instable state.

Meanwhile, Governor M M Jacob has summoned a 13-day budget session from tomorrow. He will deliver his customary speech.

However, Assembly secretariat officials said that soon after Governor Jacob addresses the session, Speaker Martin M Danggo is likely to adjourn the House for three days to allow the newly formed government, headed by Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, to prepare for the session.

The budget session will resume on March 16 with President A P J Abdul Kalam addressing the 60-member state legislative Assembly.

Ten killed, 34 injured in truck accident in western Orissa

Sambalpur, Mar 11 (UNI) Ten members of a marriage party were killed and 34 others injured, some of them seriously, when the truck carrying them overturned near Piplipali, about 80 km from here today. Police said the mini truck carrying the marriage party, was returning to Piplipali from Talmunda when the accident occurred. While four people died on the spot, two others succumbed to their injuries in the Baragarh Hospital and four in the V S S Medical College and Hospital.....

Lapang allocates portfolios to ministers

Shillong, Mar 11 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Donwa Dethwelson Lapang today announced the allocation of portfolios among his 11 cabinet colleagues after taking over the office from his predecessor J D Rymbai. Mr Rymbai, who was defiant for the past five days to Congress president Sonia Gandhi's directive to step down, yesterday put in his paper paving way for Mr Lapang to take over as the Chief Minister. Mr Lapang has retained portfolios of Cabinet Affairs, Home (Police), Personnel,.....

Dhaka-Kolkata rail link to start on April 14

Kolkata, Mar 11 (UNI) Come April 14, the Bengali New Years' day, the Bengalis will have a reason to rejoice as Kolkata-Dhaka rail link is expected to be restored, marking a new phase of co-operation between India and Bangladesh. Official sources here today said the railway link would open another crucial phase of cross-border linkages with India's neighbours. In the new mileau of co-operation between the interim government in Bangladesh and India, the train would be operated by India and Bangladesh.....
