Implement welfare schemes for handicapped, says Kokje

Shimla, Mar 11 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Governor V S Kokje has stressed the need for coordinated efforts for effective implementation of welfare schemes for handicapped.

Disability was a social problem and is a challenge that could only be faced effectively with the cooperation from the society, he said, while speaking at a state level workshop on disability organised jointly by Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies and Rehabilitation Council of India here.

Mr Kokje said all sections of the society should cooperate in solving the problem as government alone would not be able to do so.

Several welfare programmes for the handicapped were being implemented at the national and international levels for changing attitude of the society towards them.

Fast unto death over problems of gas tragedy victims continues

Bhopal, Mar 11 (UNI) The fast unto death of certain organisations struggling for victims of 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, world's worst industrial disaster, entered into seventh day today. Bhopal Group For Information and Action's Satinath Shadangi told reporters here that the agitation will continue until their demands were met. He said four women from the Mahila Mandal and other organisations joined the strike. Protest against Amarinder in his home town on historical site

Patiala, Mar 11 (UNI) A large number of city residents, particularly morning walkers and theatre lovers today staged a protest in the historic Baradari Gardens to register their protest against the closure of some roads in the Gardens by a hotel chain which is setting up a hotel. The protestors formed a human chain on The Mall entrance to the gardens. The morning walkers had planned the protest against the decision of the previous Punjab government led by Capt Amarinder.....

PSBs would bring down NPA below 0.5 per cent: Chidambaram

Coimbatore, March 11 (UNI) Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said the Public Sector Banks (PSBs) would be able to bring down the Net Non Performing Assets (NPA) to below 0.5 per cent within next few years. Inaugurating the Indian Overseas Bank(IOB)'s new branch at Vadavalli near here, he said at present the net NPA in PSBs is 1.3 per cent and efforts were on to bring it down to one per cent by next year.
