Children-given polio drops in capital

New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) Lakhs of children below five years of age were administered polio vaccine at 7500 Polio booths across the capital today.

Around 30,000 workers and employees of the Health Department were pressed into service from 0900 hrs to 1600 hrs to ensure maximum reach.

Stalls had been put up up at Railway Stations, ISBTs, Public places, including Appu Ghar, major temples, Metro Stations, Millennium Park, Zoo and Mc Donalds outlets.

The drive was preceeded by a weeklong door-to-door survey under search and immunization Pulse Polio Campaign.

Around 17,000 workers in 86,00 teams visited different colonies, including Slum and JJ Clusters, to search and administer Polio Drops to left out children.

The only cause of concern for Delhi is huge population that migrates from neighbouring states into the capital and are potential polio victims.

The government is initiating successive drives to reduce if not eliminate the polio cases for ever.

DAN loses one seat in bypolls, Congress gains one

Kohima, Mar 13 (UNI) The ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) lost one seat while the Opposition Congress gained one in the Dimapur-I and Tuensang Sadar-II constituency bypolls. With the results being declared yesterday, Congress candidate Kejong Chang was elected from Tuensang Sadar-II and Atomi Zhimomi of the NPF from Dimapur-I. The present party position after the by-elections was Nagaland Peoples Front(NPF) 32, BJP five, the JD(U) two and Independent four while the members of the Opposition Congress rose to 17.....

Ailing HC chairman Geelani being taken to US for treatment

Sriangar, Mar 11 (UNI) Ailing Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC), will be taken to the United Statesfor specialised treatment. Mr Geelani, suffering from cancer, his wife and son were given passports by the Regional Passport Office (RPO), here, on the directions from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, following appeals by the Hurriyat Conference and a number of mainstream and separatist leaders. Their passports were sent from here to Delhi yesterday, a spokesman of the HC Aiyaz.....

Speaker distributes laptop to 60 legislators

Shillong, Mar 13 (UNI) Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo has distributed laptops to 60 legislators of the state. Mr Danggo said the initiative was taken so that the legislators would not lag behind in terms of computer literacy. Information Technology Minister Robert Garnet Lyngdoh, elated by Mr Danggo's initiative, said, ''Our Speaker is making serious efforts to make the legislators acquainted with the latest Information Technology.'' He said the legislators should also permeate their experience in this field.....
