Chennai North District bags first place in boat race

Chennai, Mar 11 (UNI) The Chennai North District has won the state level fibre boat race finals, organised by AIADMK fishermen wing for 59th birthday celeberations of their party Supremo J Jayalalithaa, held here today.

In a statement, Fishermen Wing Secretary D Jayakumar said Cuddalore and Kanyakumari bagged the second and third places, respectively.

He said the Fishermen Wing had conducted the priliminary rounds in all the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Teams from Chennai, Cuddalore, Kanyakumari, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Nagapattinam and Thanjavur districts participated in the finals today.

In the swimming contest Hemanathan of Tiruvallur secured first place, while Joy Felicarf of Kanyakumari and Senthilkumar of Thanjavur finished in the second and third places, respectively, he added.

Party's Election Wing Secretary O Panneerselvam and Headquarters Secretary K A Sengottaiyan honoured the winners. The prizes would be distributed by Ms Jayalalithaa in a separate function to be held shortly, he added.

Centre has hiked allocation for TUF: Elangovan

Kancheepuram, Mar 11 (UNI) The Centre had allocated Rs 911 crore for the Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) for 2007-08, Union Minister of State for Textiles E V K S Elangovan today said. Speaking to medipersons after inaugurating a modern silk testing centre here, Mr Elangovan said this representated a substantial increase over last year's allocation of Rs 541 crore. The government also planned to set up textile parks at Palladam, Kumarapalayam, Madurai and Erode for which a sum of Rs 20.....

MK shocked over Centre's nay on Tamil in HC

Chennai, Mar 11 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has expressed shock and surprise over the Centre's letter disagreeing with the proposal of the Tamil Nadu Government for introduction of Tamil in Madras High Court. In his letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home, Law and Justice Ministers, a copy of which was made available to press here tonight, Mr Karunanidhi pointed out that on December 6 last, the State Assembly passed a resolution for introduction of Tamil.....
