Centre to set up institute to study seismic activity in NE

Aizwal, Mar 11 (UNI) The Ministry of Earth Sciences will set up a research institute to study seismic activities in the Northeast and has already sent a proposal to the Finance Ministry for necessary sanction.

Official sources here today said following the proposal of NE states the ministry had initiated the move of setting up an exclusive centre to survey the seismic activities in the region.

According to Bureau of Indian Standards apart from Jammu&Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and parts of North Bihar, the entire NE region lies in seismic Zone-V.

''Since NE region is mostly hilly and formed of sedimentary rocks, the Centre has taken a number of initiatives while the state governments were asked to follow the disaster management rules and make people aware about earthquake'', sources said.

Both North Eastern Council (NEC) and Ministry of Development of Northeast Region (DoNER) have been working on a project for the region to save it from high-intensity earthquake, sources added.

SRSU appeals for peace to NSCN faction

Kohima, Mar 11(UNI) The Satakha Range Students' Union(SRSU) has appealed to the leaders of the NSCN factions to restrain their cadres from fighting in civilian inhabited areas. In a release here today, SRSU Secretary K Jimo said inter- factional clashes have caused miseries, loss of livestock and properties. Lives of the civilians were also threatened and they were living in perpetual fear and trauma. Kohima, Mar 11(UNI) Strawberry cultivation has been started x successfully in Nagalnd using organic farming methods. The first best of locally grown organic strawberries in Niathu Gardens at Zubza under Kohima district, about 13 Kms away from Kohima, was on display at the Floral Galleria at Kohima Local ground, organised by the Nagaland Horticulture Department on Thursday last.
