40 per cent polling in Islampur by-election

Biharsharif, Mar 11 (UNI) Assembly by-election in Islampur was held peacefully with about 40 per cent electorates exercising their franchise today.

Polling passed off peacefully amidst tight security arrangements with two companies of paramilitary forces and six companies of Bihar Military Police being deployed to ensure fair poll, District Magistrate and Returning Officer of Nalanda Anand Kishore said.

Some anti-social elements tried to disrupt the polling at booth numbers 15, 57, 96 and 105, however, the security forces foiled their attempts and took them into custody.

Altogether 21 people were arrested from various places in this connection.

JD(U) candidate Pratima Sinha, CPI leader Rakesh Kumar Roshan, a joint candidate of UPA besides CPI(ML) candidate Sudhir Kumar were among the three main candidates.

Seema Parihar to contest election from Mirzapur

Mirzapur, Mar 11 (UNI) Former dacoit Seema Parihar will contest the by-elections from the Mirzapur parliamentary seat on Indian Justice Party (IJP) ticket, IJP general secretary Kali Charan said here. The by-election for the Mirzapur parliamentary seat is on May 3 alongwith the sixth phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. In the 2004 general elections, Narendra Singh Kushwaha of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had successfully contested from this seat by defeating Virendra Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party.....

Arjun Singh To Brief Media On Central Budget

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) With education dubbed a ''prime imperative'' in the new budget, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh will brief journalists tomorrow on the Central Budget of HRD. This will be Mr Singh's first news conference in more than two months since he was admitted to hospital on December 20 ''for routine medical check-up.'' HRD officials say the Minister is also expected to update media on such issues as reservation and education facilities for minorities. Among Budget 2007-08.....

Beas assembly poll records 80 per cent polling

Amritsar, Mar 11 (UNI) Polling in the sensitive Beas assembly constituency of Punjab today passed off peacefully with an estimated 80 per cent of the 1.42 lakh electorate exercising their franchise. The Election Commission (EC) had made elaborate security arrangements for the polls and 20 Para Military Force (PMF) and state commando companies were posted in Beas the for smooth conduct of the poll. The polling, which commenced at 0800 hrs under inclement weather conditions in all the 129 booths, ended.....
